
We are looking for an undergraduate research assistant (URA) who will contribute to the Gulf of Mexico Basin Depositional Synthesis Project (GBDS). The URA will work with geophysical and geological data, geographic information systems, geosoftware and scientific literature to accomplish GBDS research goals.
Duration
Spring and Fall semesters part time, and Summer full time.
Job Description
The position entails working as an Undergraduate Research Assistant (URA) as part of a research team in support of an oil and gas industry funded project which focuses on the depositional history of the Gulf of Mexico (onshore and offshore). URAs work with geophysical and geological data, geographic information systems, geosoftware and scientific literature to accomplish GBDS research goals. URAs not only have the opportunity to work with industry data and software, successful students may also interact with industry geoscientists at GBDS’s annual review.
Database maintenance tasks:
- Editing, geo-referencing and digitizing geologic maps in ArcGIS
- Locating and accessing geologic data (well, paleontological, and seismic)
- Assisting with data management for multiple databases
- Creation of LAS files by digitizing well logs data
- Assisting with literature searches and reference organization
- Working with geologic core and samples
- Word processing and creation and editing of spreadsheets
- Computer illustration of figures and cross-sections
- Printing and binding project reports
- Clerical assistance as necessary
Research project opportunities:
There are opportunities for independent research projects that will depend on the student’s interests. Projects may include subsurface mapping with seismic or well data, analyses of core and other geologic samples, or constructing a GIS project. Recent projects include:
- The Late Pleistocene evolution of Mississippi Canyon
- The Spatial Variability of the Mineralogy of Paleogene Sandstones in the Gulf of Mexico
