For anyone with an interest in prehistoric life on Earth, just what caused the mass extinction of the dinosaurs has been a question that continues to fascinate long after it was first asked.

A recent article published on the Christian Science Monitor website explores this topic and includes comments from Sean Gulick, research associate professor at the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics.

The article, by Christian Science Monitor staff writer Eva Botkin-Kowacki, notes that the six mile-wide asteroid that crashed into the planet about 66 million years ago played a big part in the demise of the dinosaurs but, according to new research, was not the only decisive factor in changing the course of life on the planet. Gulick comments that where the asteroid struck — what is now the Yucatán peninsula — made a big difference as well.
