The UT-GOM2-2 Expedition was completed in late summer of 2023 after many years of scientific, engineering, and logistical planning. An expedition lead by the University of Texas at Austin (UT) was first conceived in the spring of 2014 but its roots go back to the 2009 Gas Hydrates Joint Industry Project Leg II (JIP II). It is impossible to name the hundreds of contributing individuals and institutions. The leadership team is so thankful for the support of so many without which we would not have been able to complete this large effort.
The United States Department of Energy – Office of Fossil Energy funded this initiative and provided enormous logistical and technical support through many significant strategic changes. DOE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (Kyle Clark, Rick Baker, John Rogers, Ray Boswell, Gabby Intihar, Sailendra Mahapatra, Jared Ciferno, Vanessa Nunez-Lopez, and Maria Vargas) provided careful counsel and technical guidance throughout the effort. Our Advisory Board (Rick Baker, Ray Boswell, Ann Cook, Tim Collett, Bill Shedd, and Matt Frye) was key to identifying the highest priority scientific objectives for the expedition, and providing the guidance to perform the highest priority science within the limited budget. Our Science Team committed endless hours working the scientific and logistical details required to meet our science objectives (Carla Thomas (Lead), Stephen C. Phillips, Timothy S. Collett, Ann E. Cook, Evan Solomon, Frederick Colwell, and Joel E. Johnson).
The USGS, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) helped us deal with many regulatory concerns. I thank Timothy S. Collett and Stephen C. Phillips (USGS), Teree Campbell and Chad Vaughan (BOEM), and William Sanders and Colin Davis (BSEE). Bill Shedd (BOEM), Stephen Palmes (BOEM), and Matt Frye (BOEM) were wonderful sources of insight into both technical challenges and regulatory processes. We also thank Sharon Angove Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Jeff Harris (Louisiana Department of Natural Resources).
At the University of Texas, there were enormous logistical, technical, and administrative challenges to overcome to achieve the expedition. We acknowledge the enormous contributions of the leadership at the University of Texas. Jesse Houghton (Regulatory Lead), Dan Jaffe and members of his team Mark Featherston and Jill Allred, Eric Agnew, Linda Shaunessy, and Steve Rosen all played a pivotal role in contracting, insuring, and permitting this expedition with help from J. Connor Consulting, Inc. Sid Alexander of ANCO was instrumental in navigating the BOEM bonding and insurance requirements. The UT Institute of Geophysics Research Administration (Sara Sieberath, Benjamin Hester, and Elizabeth Kelton) made enormous contributions to making this expedition a success. Because of their efforts, UT is proud to continue to be the only University ‘Qualified Operator’ conducting operations in deepwater Gulf of America (Gulf of Mexico), United States.
Special thanks to the team of Jennifer L. Presley, editor, and Jennie L. Lamb, graphic designer, for their hard work in preparing the Preliminary Report and Expedition Reports for publishing.
Finally, none of this could have been accomplished without Geotek Ltd., Helix Energy, and TR Consulting. Their partnership and expertise enabled us to navigate the complex business of deepwater drilling. Geotek Coring, USA, and Geotek Ltd led the coring, downhole measurements, and core processing efforts unique to the mix of conventional and pressuring coring (Peter Schultheiss, Mike Mimitz, and Melanie Holland). All of the shipboard operational and technical staff of the Helix Q-4000 again provided outstanding support and maintained a positive “can do” attitude throughout the expedition. Darin Hilton (Helix Well Ops Commercial Manager), Callum Cook (Helix Well Ops Senior Project Manager, Dhananjay Dhorje (DD) (Helix Well Ops Senior Project Engineer), Vish Subramani (Helix Well Ops Project Manager), with help from Carla Thomas (Lead Project Manager) successfully orchestrated the complex operational planning, and logistics and were on hand each step of the way as challenges arose. Thomas Red (TR Consulting) with his oilfield skills and connections served superbly as Company man and general translator between researchers and industry.
Thanks to so many in so many ways,
-Peter B. Flemings & the GOM2 Team
